Therapeutics

We are proud to offer acupuncture, shockwave therapy, regenerative therapy and more.

Richard Stringer is experienced in acupuncture therapy, which can be offered on a first-opinion or referral basis.

All of our vets offer shockwave and laser therapy for soft tissue injuries and to aid wound healing.

In horses, acupuncture involves placing fine needles through the skin at specific pressure points and can be used alongside conventional treatments and may help in the relief of musculo-skeletal pain.

It may be useful for treating:

  • Muscle soreness, particularly of the neck, shoulders, back and hindquarters.
  • Arthritis.
  • Sacroiliac pain.
  • Horses with other issues or symptoms may benefit from acupuncture – please speak to your vet to find out more

Shockwave therapy involves the focusing of waves of pressure through a piece of equipment called a transducer head into the precise area of an injury.

Shockwave therapy can be used alongside conventional treatments and may be used in cases of soft tissue and bone problems, both acute (short term) and chronic (long term), such as suspensory ligament tears and injuries, angular limb deformities, and back and neck pain.

Therapeutic laser

Our M-Vet class IV therapeutic laser provides a painless and non-invasive therapeutic technique that can be used alongside conventional therapies and may help in the treatment  of:

  • Wounds – post-surgical, traumatic, non-healing.
  • Acute and chronic tendon and ligament injuries
  • Muscle strains and trigger points
  • Neurogenic pain
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Skin conditions

Laser surgery

Our portable surgical laser can be utilised for the removal of various “lumps and bumps” such as certain sarcoids and some cases of melanomas. It can also be used in uterine cyst ablation (removal).

A surgical laser is apiece of equipment offering a safe, reliable and minimally invasive surgical method for suitable cases, under standing sedation, providing the lesion is accessible and in a safe area to treat under these conditions (cases more suitable for general anaesthesia will always be referred for laser surgery).

The heat generated by the surgical laser cuts and effectively seals small blood vessels as they are cut, producing minimal bleeding.

Surgical laser removal can usually be conducted in a single session. It may also have the benefits of rapid healing times, good cosmetic results and minimal complications.

Regenerative and biological therapies

We utilise evidence-based approaches when employing biological treatments and therapies.

These treatments may offer targeted solutions, which may enhance tissue regeneration and healing quality to reduce recovery time and reinjury rate in soft tissues and joints, and offer alternatives for respiratory disease treatment.

On a case-by-case basis, our vets may offer treatments such as Platelet-rich-plasma, Stem Cells, and alpha-2-macroglobulin therapies.

Sarcoid removal

Sarcoids are the most common skin cancer of horses, can affect all breeds and ages, and can show a wide variation of appearance and behaviour.

How we treat sarcoids

The most suitable treatment depends on the type and location of the lesions.

Some cases will resolve with simple topical agents, whereas others may need to be surgically removed. We offer surgical laser removal, with which we have seen good results and faster recoveries.

Your vet can discuss the most appropriate treatment for your horse with you.
