Our range of equine supplement products
Stringer Equine Veterinary Practice have been working with a specialised veterinary suppliers to produce a range of Equine Supplements. The first products in the range are now available:
Stringer Equine Ulcer Granules
An Equine nutritional supplement suitable for feeding to horses displaying signs of gastric ulcers.
A unique supplement for daily feeding to horses prone to gastric disturbances. Stringer Equine Ulcer Granules will assist in maintaining optimum gut health and function, allowing maximum utilisation of feed. Ulcer Granules supply a unique formulation of prebiotics, amino acids, seaweed extract and specific minerals necessary to aid in the recovery and maintenance of a healthy digestive tract. It is supplied in a convenient pelleted formulation.
Stringer Equine Ulcer Paste
For horses suffering from gastric disturbances exhibiting as depressed appetite, behavioural changes, weight loss, poor performance or cribbing.
Ulcer Paste contains:
- Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Hydroxide: alkaline materials to neutralise acids
- Seaweed Extract: creates a floating raft of gel which helps to protect the non glandular part of the stomach from acid
- Form a food substance for the beneficial bacteria in the hind gut
- Are recognised to stimulate growth of desirable bacteria which can result in a positive relationship between bacteria and host
- Can remain available as substances for microbial populations to utilise, and thus promote increased intestinal efficiency
- Glutamine: an important amino acid for repair of epithelial cells
- Threonine: an amino acid, restriction of which may limit intestinal mucin synthesis
- Slippery Elm:
- Rich in mucilage it soothes inflammation internally
- Used to soothe the digestive tract for ulceration and colitis
- Is an easily assimilated food particularly in young foals and elderly horses.
When slippery elm preparations are taken internally they cause reflex stimulation of nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to mucus secretion. For this reason it is effective for the protection against stomac h ulcers, colitis and gut inflammation.
- The mucilage of slippery elm is a demulcent and emollient to the digestive system. A demulcent is an ingredient that is able to form a soothing layer over mucus membranes and gastric mucosa. An emollient soothes and softens to prevent water loss.
Stringer Equine Foal Paste
A highly concentrated equine nutritional supplement promoting digestive and gastric health.
Young foals are particularly susceptible to digestive and gastric disturbance and ulceration. Containing the same elements as the ulcer paste but formulated especially for foals, Stringer Equine Foal Paste is recommended for use during and after antibiotic treatment, during digestive disorders and incidence of diarrhoea, and following deworming. Also useful for support during “stressful” events such as travelling and / or hospitalisation.
Stringer Equine Blood Tonic
A premium iron enriched B vitamin syrup. It also contains Sorbitol, which enhances the serum concentrations that result from the oral administration of vitamin B12. Competition horses need dietary supplementation of B complex vitamins and iron, as these nutrients are needed for red blood cell formation and important metabolic functions relating to exercise. Stringer Equine Blood Tonic will supply these nutrients to fortify and strengthen performance horses, to help them reach full athletic potential. Blood Tonic is also useful for horses that are “flat” following other illnesses, speeding recovery from bacterial and viral infections.
Stringer Equine Probiotic
A high potency probiotic formula supporting digestive and gastric health in horses. Stringer Equine Probiotic supplies live beneficial yeast stabilising the intestinal flora and physiological digestion in cases of gastric disturbance, digestive disturbance or stress. It also supplements vitamins and other nutrients to support digestion and gastric health. For use during and after antibiotic treatment, during digestive disorders and incidence of diarrhoea, following deworming and at times of stress.
Stringer Equine Joint Supplement & Joint Supplement Plus
Stringer Equine Joint Supplement & Joint Supplement Plus are formulated to benefit the overall health of articular cartilage in the horse, and as a nutritional support in the healing process of connective tissue and cartilage.
Stringer Equine Joint Supplement contain natural ingredients proven to alleviate joint problems. Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is a common disease of the horse. It most frequently affects the hocks, front fetlocks and front navicular bones. DJD consequences can be very severe. The health of articular cartilage depends on a delicate balance between the formulation and the degeneration of its components. Horse’s joins are constantly asked to absorb shock and stress as the loading force of locomotion. The faster the gait the greater the risk to the joint.
There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing a degenerative joint problem. These include trauma, age of the horse, activity type & level, and a genetic predisposition to disease. Cartilage, which is the “last defence” for horses joints, encounters shock on an ongoing basis.
Previously it was believed that cartilage tissue, once damaged, was irreparable. However, we now know that the body is capable of creating the environment for cartilage tissue regeneration. Certain ingredients are required to replenish the components of the cartilage matrix.
- Glucosamine Hydrochloride
- Chondroitin Sulphate
- Bio-available Sulphur (MSM powder)
All three of these ingredients occur naturally in the body and can therefore be classed as neutraceuticals (a neutraceutical is an orally administered substance required for normal body structure and function, and fed to improve health & well-being).
Cartilage is an usual tissue because it has a low cellular concentration in its matrix. So, cartilage which has such an important role to play to protect joints and allow non-frictional movement, is at a disadvantage when damaged because it must repair itself with a self-limiting quantity of “building blocks”. The three ingredients listed above support and speed up healing in cartilage matrix and some researchers have even indicated that these ingredients may have a prophylactic effect on the joint.
Glucosamine is essentially the building block for all the needed lubricants and shock absorbers in the body. These are technically known as glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans (PGs).
Healthy cartilage can only make a limited amount of glucosamine BUT the addition of glucosamine salts into the diet can increase GAG production by 170%. In short, Glucosamine Hydrochloride stimulates cartilage regeneration.
Chondroitin sulphate is the most abundant GAG in the cartilage matrix. It has two roles to play with regard to cartilage – it both forms a structural component of PGs (which are shock absorbers within the joint) and inhibits degradative enzymes.
Degenerative Joint Disease normally occurs where there is an altered cartilage metabolism, ie. When the rate of breakdown of cartilage is greater than the synthesis of new cartilage tissue.
MSM is an organic sulphur, which is easily absorbed and usable by the body. It is found in almost every cell of every animal and plant. MSM is known to alleviate pain associated with systemic inflammatory disorders, most notably arthritis.
